Mount Cayambe is a prominent stratovolcano located in the Ecuadorian Andes, approximately 70 kilometers northeast of Quito, the capital city of Ecuador. It is the third-highest mountain in Ecuador, with an elevation of 5,790 meters (18,996 feet) above sea level.
One of the distinctive features of Mount Cayambe is its permanent glaciers. The mountain is known for having one of the few equatorial glaciers in the world. The glaciers on Cayambe are vital water sources for the surrounding region and are popular among mountaineers and climbers. The highest of these glaciers, located on the summit, is called the “Cumbre Roca,” and it presents a challenging but rewarding ascent for experienced climbers. Due to the equatorial location of Cayambe, the glaciers are relatively low in latitude compared to glaciers in other parts of the world.
The surrounding area of Mount Cayambe is also known for its rich biodiversity and is part of the Cayambe-Coca Ecological Reserve, a protected area that encompasses diverse ecosystems, including paramo, cloud forest, and Andean grasslands. The mountain and its surrounding environment offer stunning natural landscapes, making it a popular destination for both nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers
